What is an EV tariff?

An EV tariff is an electricity plan built around off-peak charging. You get a very low rate for a set window overnight — often around 7p per kWh — in exchange for a slightly higher daytime rate.

Types of EV tariff

  • Fixed off-peak window: A guaranteed cheap rate between set hours, usually somewhere between 11pm and 6am.
  • Dynamic (half-hourly): Prices change every 30 minutes with wholesale costs. Cheapest overall if you can automate charging.
  • EV-only rates: The discount applies just to the electricity your charger uses, leaving the rest of the house on a standard rate.

How do EV tariffs work?

They rely on a smart meter recording your usage every half hour, so your supplier can bill different rates at different times of day.
